People Watching / by Michael Thurber

Terry worked twenty-three years as a telephone operator. Later he worked as an operator for MDS until he went on disability.

We bond over our love of people watching. I ask him if he's seen anything interesting tonight. He has a high, soft voice.

"No, not really. Though I've seen many interesting things."

"Anything in particular stand out as really interesting?"

"I've seen women holding hands with women. Men holding hands with men. I've seen people fall down after a few too many drinks and they get picked up by their friends."

As he says this a woman with only one hand walks past us.
